How to protect your savings from scammers

Fraud isn’t just a headline or a distant statistic—it’s a daily reality affecting neighbours, friends, and families across our community. Recent data from UK Finance reveals a staggering £629 million was stolen in the first half of 2025 alone. These aren’t just numbers; they represent hard-earned savings and the peace of mind of people just like you.

Today’s scammers are sophisticated. They don’t always sound like “criminals”. They sound like professional bank staff, helpful tech support, or even the police. However, you have a superpower they can’t beat: the ability to stop.

1. The OTP Golden Rule

One-time passcodes (OTPs) are the final “digital lock” on your front door. Fraudsters will try every trick in the book to get you to hand over the key.

Never share your OTP: No legitimate company – ever – will ask you for this code over the phone or via text.

Read the full message: Don’t just look at the numbers. Read what the code is actually for. Are you “authorizing a payment” you didn’t make?

Trust your gut: If a request for a code feels sudden or strange, hang up.

2. Urgency is a red flag

Scammers love to create a “fire drill.” They want you to feel panicked so you act before you think.

Verify the source: If you get an unexpected call about your money, hang up. Call back using a trusted number from the back of your card or an official statement.

Shop smart: Before entering card details on a new site, take 60 seconds to check for reviews or “HTTPS” in the URL.

Take your time: A legitimate business will never be upset that you are being cautious.

3. Spotting the imposter

One of the most heartless scams involves criminals pretending to be the authorities. It is vital to remember that the police or your bank will never:

Ask you to move money to a “safe account.”

Ask you to buy gift cards or withdraw cash to “help with an investigation.”

If in doubt, use these official lines:

  • 101: To reach the police for non-emergencies.
  • 159: A secure, direct line to connect you with your bank.

The Bottom Line: Pause. Think. Verify.

We lead busy lives, and clicking “approve” or “send” takes only a second. But when it comes to your finances, slowing down is your strongest shield. Talk about these tips with your family, especially those who might be less tech-savvy.
